I live in California and have had to deal with unemployment before. Calling them for anything is always such a hassle. When I do call the 800 number for anything, I either get one of two automated voice messages. One will dispense a bunch of useless information, the other will ask you it press 1 for english, and 2 for spanish. It will continue to ask you to punch in numbers and I've found the sooner you enter the number sequence when it asks you to press 1 for english, the sooner you can find out if they have a high volume of callers so you can hang up and call again.  The number sequence is 1243.

I had the same claim cancelation question and I called the 800 number using my 1243 method and got through to someone in 5 minutes. The lady told me to stop sending in the claim form, and it will cancel itself.

It sounds funny, but if you want to cancel your claim, do NOTHING.
EDD instructs you to just not send in the continued claim form that is attached to the check. EDD takes care of the rest.

This is straight copy+paste from their website.
"How to Stop Receiving Benefits

To stop receiving Unemployment Insurance, do not mail your Continued Claim Form, DE 4581. EDD will assume you have returned to work and/or no longer wish to claim benefits."

Follow this link:eapply4ui.edd.ca.gov SELECT A CATEGORY, choose "Unemployment Insurance Benefits"
More information will appear below the category box.
Under SELECT A TOPIC ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT, choose "Claim filing - Stop Benefits or Cancel Claim"
More information will appear below the box.
This is where EDD tells you to stop sending in the form and they will assume you got a job. If you still have questions, you can click "Continue" at the bottom of the page and it will take you to another page where you can submit a more detailed message.

I can't say how long it will take for the detailed message to get a response, but it seems cancelling the claim is easy.

Hope this helps!

I was unemployed for two months in California before I got a full-time job. On the last form that the EDD office sent, I provided my earnings for the associated two week period and wrote on the form for good measure: "Employed full-time. Please cancel claim". They just mailed me another form today. I think my only option is to not respond. The website and phone number are useless.

I was denied unemployment in California when I lost my job in December. I moved to Pennsylvania, I've been working since January in here. I was let go from my job a few weeks ago and I tried to file for unemployment . I was sent a letter stating that I currently have an existing claim in CA with a balance of $6786 and a benefit year ending on 1/2/10. The thing is that I never received a check for unemployment because I was denied. I've tried calling CA and I just get a recording that tells me that they have too high of a call volume and they tell me to visit their web site... That doesn't help me. Can you tell me what I need to do in order to have a valid claim filed in PA?
Thank You

I think the procedure is pretty standard, when you start working the state unemployment website that you make your claims on now asks if you have earned any wages. If you answer yes and submit the earnings you will no longer receive the unemployment benefits. It will build your "bank" until the next time you are unemployed.

I have decided to cancel my claim for unemployment.  To much of my own confusion...I was under the impression this was a benefit allowed to me as to wait until further assistance could be helpful.
Being told by an  employee on your telephone service.  This was a benefit allowed to me also.  This was a mistake.  It is not for someone who has been out on State Disability.
With all the medications I take for  pain and depression I am not of sound mind to make such decisions.  I will cancel you.I.  until I can further understand if this is the right avenue for me at this time.

Thank YOU,

I am trying to cancel my claim for unemployment Insurance. After much decision I now know that this claim was a mistake. I should not have listenened to the employee on the phone and should have waited for my claim to end. Then I could apply for Social Security Disability.
Instead I listened to a young man who suggested to apply for UI. Benefits. This was wrong advice. Please help me to receive my last couple checks and allow me to reapply with Social Security Disability. Thank you.
