I've been unemployed for over a year now.   Work in my trade has been slower than I have ever seen it in the twenty years that I have been a part of it.   At least 25% of our local is out of work and their is no light at the end of the tunnel,   and today I just realized that my unemployment has ran out.

If the Senate doesn't extend unemployment and/or generate work for people like me,   I and a lot of people I know will not be able to sustain.   I never in my darkest dreams imagined that the economy would effect employment the way that it has.   What's even scarier is the fact that the senate wants to act like it's our fault and look the other way.   I would much rather be working than collecting unemployment,   but I'm just a working man.   If I were a major bank,   I would have been bailed out!!!!

Where's the justice?

They need to stop saying that a vote from the senate will likely happen this week cause for a month they have been saying that ever single week and they have not voted on it yet. The senate obviously doesn't care about the unemployed cause if they did the extension would have been passed by now but instead they pass a pay increase for themselves. Also it has been 2 days short of a month since the house of reps. Passed the extension but the senate hasn't done anything and they think that the unemployed can just keep waiting. While the senate is playing their games thousands of unemployed are having their homes foreclosed on, going hungry, defaulting on their bills, being thrown out on the street, etc. The government tells us we are the greatest nation in the world but when it comes to taking care of our own people the government turns its back on their people and uses our money to send overseas.

Hopefully, on Monday Nov 2. The senate is only working 2 days next week. Senate Majority Leader Reid has threatened to force the senate to reconvene Saturday if the bill isn't resolved by Tuesday. Even if that happens the the bill must be sent back to the House of Represenatives to reconcile the differences of the Senate Bill and the Houses Bill. Then it would have to be signed by the President. Even if all that gets done then each states unemployment department must notify the people who are eligible.
My suggestion for all of us who have run out of benefits is to start looking for a soup kitchen to celebrate Thanksgiving and while your there talk to the homeless and find out where the best overpasses are to sleep. Also, I have read that the extension won't be retroactive so don't make the mistake of borrowing money from family or friends and giving them a specific date when you can pay them back.
There is nothing in the world I would rather be than employed but unfortunately I can't afford a plane ticket to China to apply for my old job.

I wish they would get off their bottoms and pass it already if they was in danger of being homeless it would have passed the first day. I have a disabled husband and daughter that depend on me to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I was sent a letter about going back to school through unemployment and until the extension is passed it is messed up too. I'm sure all of the people that is unemployed want to take care of their own family we just need a little help for now

I am a single mother of 4 children - 2 of which still lives at home. I am terrified that me and my children will have to find the nearest shelter because I wont be able to pay my rent and bills. The sad part about it is that I am a LPN and still can't find a job. Sure they advertise a million jobs for LPN's but the part that they don't tell you is that your background check must be spotless in Michigan to work. I was wrongfully terminated from my job in December of 2009 and if unemployment benefits are cancelled, I will have to resort to my old ways and sell my body or commit some crime in order to take care of my children, but yet, all the citizens of Iraq and the third world countries are being taken care of by our own government, now how ironic is that!!!

D since 2008 and as of March 2010 I am no longer getting any unemployment.. I am 56 years old and believe me no one wants a mature experience woman, or so I have been told on all the interviews I have gone on.   Of course not in those words but I can read behind the lines.   PLEASE you must extend tier 5 or it will not be long and I will be living in a box because I can no longer pay my housing costs. SOMEONE please wake up and see that there are many americans in my same situation.

Every week they say it will get voted on and then no vote and then we are told this week and still no vote. But they did vote to give themselves raises, wasn't that nice of them. Next thursday will be a month since the house passed the extension but the senate still does not vote on it. This is america for you. Land of opportunity my butt.

Today is Oct.20, 2009. I just called Barbara Boxers office and was told it is out of committee and is placed on the Senate calendar to be brought up next week. I'm very worried just like so many of you. I don't know how I'll be able to pay the bills. I might end up with my family living in a tent except I can't afford a tent!! These are very stressful times. Once the bill gets passed how long will it be before we see a check? Will it be retroactive? This mess is just plain horrible!!

Their drivers are gettin paid better than we are which is nothing.Unemployed for the first time in my life, I've applied for over 600 jobs. Where are those jobs Obama? I didn't create this economic crisis. Why am I suffering the worst?

As Americans we vote into office those people we thing best for the job, and they are to be our voice in gov.My unemployment in fla ran out a month ago. I have sent emails to my senate reps and both have been good enough to respond." the process of gov is slow , the issue is in the senate and we are working to get it finished".My response to them was well when your next term comes up how about your voters considering your actions. To sen Kyle I sent a message that my family in az would rather vote for a trained chimp than see him in office again.700 mil to wall st, bail out car comp ,run a war and send aid to every country but our own. This is when gov should fear thier citizens , they work for us.

All this time I thought we were voting for trained chimps. I say let the people rise up and take back control of our country. Let's make " Of the People, For the People, By the People" the truth again. All we need is more people like me, people with the guts to stand up to to Uncle Sam. Look at why our ancestors came to America, unfair treatment, I.E. Taxes, unjust laws etc..
Simply put the same reasons I am a Proud American who is ASHAMED of his Gov't. Put an educated blue collar in office!!

This originally was an old post but it is still a relevant question today July 13th 2010, because once again, the Senate's inaction has left people with nothing. The vote did not pass by three votes, which included all the republicans and one idiot democrat. So the question is, when are they going to vote again, anyone know??? Fml

They are voting as I type this. I learned today that I wasn't going to recieve a check this week and I have had a crash course today on this bill. Republicans do want to pass the extension but as usual Democrats are using this extension as a vehicle to pass a number of bad tax increasing, vaguely defined, paperwork increasing laws that will hurt small business. Republicans wanted to seperate the unemployment extension from the rest of the garbage weeks ago so that it would not be held up. I am a broke pawn this week. The Democrats have created a win-win situation for themselves and a lose-lose scenario for the unemployed.

Will we get an extention after June 5,2010? If not, maybe we need a new senate, which is coming up in Nov.  I wish these senators could walk in our shoes. Ithink the senates out for themselves NOT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!  Look what the government is doing for the people around the oil spill.  Maybe the government should give the American People in the south some money and let the government fight with BP

From what I've heard it's taking so long because they're re-writing the bill and also the bill is having some problems in terms of funding. They've already been rejected once on trying to take the money from I want to say the stimulus package?? Everyone supports the bill so I think it will have no problem passing once they get all the niches works out. When that is god only know.

When those lazy bastards in the senate decide when they want to help the american people.Don't forget christmas is coming-so they are probably thinking of their own party plans now and not about us. I think the senate is a bunch of government red tape bullshit.I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon (if at all).

Last I heard it was in fact voted on, but failed 59-40 because Sen. John Kerry was campaigning in Kentucky. A hell of a thing to delay funding on something a lot of folks need.

I am a 25 year old male who has been unemployed for a year now. I'm trying and praying everyday that congress would please pass the unemployment extension. The company I was working for went out of business when the housing market crashed and caused many people to loose their homes. I have worked full time jobs since I was sixteen years old so I'm not wanting this as a crutch to sit at home and watch tv and get a $570 check every two weeks when I was making double that working. People all over the tv are saying that by stoping the benefits it will force people to go get a job. Well how am I to look for a job when I don't have money for gas to look for a job. How am I to look online for a job when I cannot pay my internet service. I want to work so bad but with the limited funds how am I supposed to. While congress had a 4th of july filled with bbq, fireworks, in vacation home from here to Hamptons, I was at home trying to figure out how I was going to get something to eat and how to get to store and buy it. Right now I feel like I'm in a no win situation right now I'm trying so so hard to make something out of nothing but I keep finding myself in a no win situation and this is enough to make you want to go out a commit a crime just so you can eat and have some lights on in your home. I'm single and don't have to provide for anyone but myself and this is how I'm feeling so I can imagine how someone with a family to support and no way to support them is feeling. Its human nature to do whatever you have to do to support your family and a lot of people are feeling like there is nothing left for me to do but what I have to and thats put food on my childrens plate and can you be mad at someone who has done everything right and nothing is happening to do something wrong and make something happen. If there is anything that I or my fellow Americans can do to help please let me know before human nature of survival kicks in and we start doing what it feels like we have no choice to do.

Stop trying to blame the Democrats. Its the Republications that got us in this mess. They are trying to make it look like the Democrats so they have a better chance in this years elections. America was founded by PEOPLE for the PEOPLE not corporations. Big business is why we are fighting for oil in the first place. Corporations have been killing this planet ( not just   BP in the gulf either) . Its fine and dandy to hand out 710 Billion to wall-street to help them out.. But 1.6 million people are to be left in the cold cause of deficient concerns? Whats wrong with this picture? I have over 6k worth of eligibility and yet I can't get a check do to this republican filibuster.   Its not my fault the company I worked for had to close its doors due to the recession. And now I had to drop out of school cause I can't find a job that will pay the bills and still give me time for school. Its people that will make a difference in this world not corporations. Just anthor case of the rich getting richer on the blood of the poor.
