Unemployment terms and benefits vary from state to state and from country to country but there are some general terms which will apply across the boards in most cases.

  • What is unemployment?
There are many different definitions of unemployment and how you can claim and receive unemployment benefit. The most obvious one is that you are not in work. Proof will be required that you have left a job, if you have did that through your own choice you are unlikely to receive any benefit of payments. In a lot of places there will be a qualification period before unemployment benefit is paid out, this can be in terms of how long you were in your job and also require you to be unemployed for a certain length of time before getting paid.

  • What documentation do I need?
You will need to provide evidence from your last employer that you have left the company, there will be standard forms for this and you should receive them at the termination of your employment. Proof of where you live is also likely to be required, being a resident in an area is compulsory to receive benefit. Finally personal identity such as Social Security number, passport, visa or driving license may also be needed to ensure your identity.

  • How much will I be paid?
Payments vary from area to area but it's unlikely that you will be paid more than 60% of your last weekly earnings. If you are unemployed there may be some other benefits available to you but the onus is on you to regain employment rather than be able to enjoy a similar lifestyle whilst unemployed.

Unemployment is good up to a certain point. Once you have exhausted unemployment, you need to find a job. Hasn't unemployment been helping and encouraging you to find a job? You can re-apply for unemployment if you get fired from another job, but remember you would have to have worked for a certain amount of time. Please check with your state's Department Of Labor.

You reapply the same way you applied the first time. You can do it online at your states UI web site.
