State tax in California is made to the Franchise Tax Board, the address is: Franchise Tax Board, PO Box 942867, Sacramento CA 94267-0001.

You can make payments in all usual methods, including through credit/ visa cards over the phone or in person, cheque by post or in person or online using their secure payment system. For information about individual requirements relating to your tax, check their website as it is very informative and will more than likely answer any questions you have, www.ftb.ca.gov/online/CheckMoCash_pay.shtml  Ensure you have your social security number to hand which ever method of payment you use (for cheques, ensure it is written on the back).

The counter service is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm (with the exception of State holidays). They can be contacted on the following numbers: 800.338.0505 (Automated Service) or 800.852.5711 (inside the U.S. To speak to an advisor). Walk in centers in the State of California are located in San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Santa Ana, San Francisco and Sacramento.  These offices are open the same hours as the telephone line.

State tax rules vary widely. Those states imposing a tax on income compute the tax as a tax rate times taxable income as defined by the state. The tax rate may be fixed for all income levels and taxpayers of a certain type, or it may be graduated, that is, the tax rates on higher amounts of income are higher than on lower amounts. Tax rates may differ for individuals and corporations.
