When writing a check to pay your Virginia state tax, it needs to be made out to the Treasurer of your city or county. Make sure you also include your social security number and telephone number on the check along with a reference to the specific tax year you are paying for.
For any businesses filling out a check, the above steps must also be completed but they must also attach the check to the specific tax return form they are completing.
For individuals, once you have filled out the check you can send it off to the following address:
Virginia Department of Taxation
PO Box 3269
Richmond, Virginia 23218
For any businesses sending their tax bill payments by check, these must be posted to the following address:
Virginia Department of Taxation
PO Box 1777
Richmond, Virginia 23218
There is also the option of paying your tax bill by credit or debit card. Cards can be used to pay individual estimated tax payments, an outstanding balance on individual income tax returns and a notice of assessments or consolidated bill statements. Payments can be made either online or over the phone by ringing 1-800-2PAY-TAX. When making payments to the credit card service provider, Official Payments Corporation, a service charge will be charged depending on the amount of the transaction. In addition, when making a payment online or over the phone, individuals will have to enter the Virginia jurisdiction code when prompted. The correct code to enter is 1080.
Those paying business taxes may also be able to set up an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) which allows funds to be transferred from one bank account to the State’s bank account. Taxpayers with a monthly liability of more than $20,000 have to pay their taxes in this way.
