The easiest way to get a hold of your tax ID number is to look at last year’s tax returns. That shouldn’t be an issue if you’ve been paying tax for a number of years, as you should have been keeping your records safe!

This isn’t the only way to get your tax ID number, though as there are a few options for retrieving the number. As well as previous records like tax returns, you can also check your receipt. The ITS will have provided you with a receipt when you first applied for your EIN. If you’re able to find this piece of paper for your reference, then you should be able to find your tax ID number.

Failing that, if you have a business checking account, a tax ID number would have been required when you first applied for it. You should then check your bank statements, or simply get on the telephone to get in touch with your bank. A financial advisor at your chosen institution will give you even more options about how you can get your tax ID number.

Do you have your paperwork from your application for the EIN when you wanted to become a state and local business? Do you have the licenses? Then you these are also platforms on which you should easily be able to retrieve your number.

Finally, your only option left would be to call the IRS business and specialty tax line. Calling 1-800-829-4933 will give you access to somebody who will require your business information, and who may be able to provide you with the information you require directly over the telephone.
