You are entitled to unemployment benefits in the US, including New York, as long as you have lost your job through no fault of your own. This means that you are usually not eligible for unemployment benefits if you were fired or quit your previous employment.
  • How much will you get?
The unemployment benefit in the US is usually calculated at the rate of 36% of the average weekly wage that you would have been receiving if you were still employed. The average weekly earnings are taken by looking at your earnings over the previous 12 months, based on wage slips etc. An average is then taken from this period and divided by 36%, leaving you with the amount of benefits you will be eligible for.  For example if you earned $20,000 during the last 12 months, this amount would be divided by 52 (the number of weeks) to give you $384.62. The task is to then find 36% of this amount by diving by 100 and multiplying by 36. This will give you a weekly unemployment benefit of $138.46 per week. As previously stated, this is dependent on a number of factors that will make you eligible for unemployment benefits. For this reason it is worth checking with the New York unemployment office to ensure that you are eligible for unemployment benefits.
