Forgetting a PIN code can be frustrating and unless you have told someone the number or have written this down somewhere, you will not be able to do anything until you have a new PIN. It is always useful to set your PIN numbers as things that you will remember like a series of numbers that have a meaning to you. You should, however, make sure that these numbers are not something that someone could guess such as your zip code, date of birth or immediate families date of birth.

There are some steps that you can take to get a new one so that you have access to your bank account or credit card again.

  • Contact bank
The first thing you have to do is contact your bank or credit card company. They will ask you the usual security questions and then you will be able to let them know that you have forgotten your PIN number. They will be able to send you one through the mail but they will not give you one over the phone or in the bank as this breaches security and although you have answered all of their questions, there is no guarantee that you are who you say you are.

  • Getting cash
While you are waiting, the bank should be able to give you access to some cash from your account that you will be able to withdraw from the bank cashier. You will need your bank card, your photo ID and you will usually need a recent payslip or utility bill that can verify your name and address. This should be able to tide you over until you get your new PIN.

If it is a bank card, you will have to go to your bank to get your pin number and show identification. If it is a credit card type, just call the 800 number on the back of the card. Be prepared to answer a lot of personal questions. They don't just give pin numbers out to anyone who may have found someones card.
