Assuming you are covered under Social Security (which you should be), you may be eligible for Social Security Disability. Good news, yes? Well, hang on a minute. In general, Social Security Disability Benefits are only paid to those who cannot work for a year or more. There is also a waiting period from the time you are approved. Here's more information from the SSA: www.ssa.gov

As far as routine down-time from surgery, I think you're out of luck...assuming your surgery goes well. But keep your eye on the ball. Hopefully, you won't need it. If you do, it's there for you. Good luck with your surgery.

There is a minimum period you have to be disabled before collecting disability unless you are dying and the rule is waived. The best thing is to speak to your social security office.
