Yes you can draw unemployment. Just contact your local office of unemployment to be sure of the proper forms to be filled out. Go on-line to your local office for details and requirements
No - unemployment is not for owners, just employees. Why haven't you contacted the Dept. Of Unemployment instead of relying on answers from people who don't know that law?
My husband and I live in Oregon. My husband is self employed is now unemployed. Can you draw unemployment in Oregon if you are self employed?
I'm self employed and I need help with my bills dew to the economy ,I'm in construction and there is no work out there can I collect unemployment?also I live in new jersey
My mother worked for me in MAssachusetts I had to lay her off today after ten years I have paid the unemployment insurance Is she eligible I am listed as a sole proprietor??? Thank you
If you weren't paying any taxes on your own business, I don't believe you can collect unemployment compensation. The money that you collect on unemployment normally comes from money collected from your wages.
The beauty of being self-employed is not having someone else as your boss. Being your own boss and owning your own business means paying your income and federal taxes either at the end of the year or each quarter. Look at your business tax records to see if you actually paid into unemployment insurance. Also, when applying for unemployment the agent who handles your paperwork talks to your old boss - why aren't you working - lay-off, fired, quit. There is criteria that has to be met before one is granted unemployment compensation. You need to look at your state unemployment compensation rules and regulations to see if you would even qualify since you are self employed.
I sell Avon and as an Independent Avon Sales Rep, I am what is considered self-employed as I don't get a check from Avon Corp. My commission is derived from my sales revenue. If I stopped selling Avon I wouldn't be able to get any unemployment compensation as my income is dependent on my sales. Federal and State income tax forms generally have a business loss/profit and if profit, a place to pay taxes on your income. I don't recall seeing anything else regarding unemployment compensation.
My conclusion is that you are just out of luck on trying to get unemployment compensation on your own business. What happened to your business? Not enough customers? Maybe you need to look at how you have been operating your business to determine what went wrong? In the meantime, either try reviving your business, start a new venture or look for a main-stream job. Times are tough, but there is work out there if we are willing to do it.
Best of luck!
