I'm considering changing my 2009 withholding to offset the amount of my 2008 refund just in case they don't pay it. At least I can put some money in my pocket NOW along with having a credit on their books to apply against a similar amount of taxes due this year. If they do pay it in 2008 then I can just re-adjust the withholding accordingly or send them a portion of their refund to me.

If we owed the state money we would be charged if it was not received by april 15th. Why can't we get a little interest added to our way overdue refunds?

The state does not have to pay interest as long as it refunds overpayment of taxes by July 15. It stinks for those of us waiting on our money, but that's the law.

Because they're trying to reap up all the interest they can in the millions they owe to you! It's July 23 and I still don't have mine which is in the thousands...real nice, Alabama.

Excellent question. My efile was accepted by the State on March 24, and I haven't seen hide nor hair of a penny of my refund yet. 5 weeks and 1 day, and the clock is still ticking.....

I Budgeted this money for this month and now I am upside down. I would not have spent the money on the front side if I thought it would take this long. Interest is fine, but of no help at the moment. I have seen reports that it may be as late as September/October time frame before they pay up. There should be a state law separating this money from the education trust fund so we would not have this problem!!!

The whole Alabama Income Tax system is crooked/corrupt.  By some legislation enacted in secret, all tax refunding is done through the education trust and education expenses get funded before any refunds are paid.  This is outright crooked.  Granted education expenses should be paid, but they should be paid from tax money legally collected.  Refunds are money that was extracted (stolen) from taxpayers in excess of the governments legally mandated taxation.  The system should be decoupled from the trust ASAP.  Remember the long wait to get your refund when it is time to elect representatives for your districts.  For myself, they owe me $1172 as of 1/4/10 for tax year 2008.
