Advertising persuades by making a product or service appear as appealing or as something that the consumer really 'needs'.

  • Differentiation
Differentiation is a really important business concept in that it makes a business appear different to another business, and makes products look different or better than other products. It shows consumers that even though they have an option, they should be choosing this particular product as it is different, superior and more useful to them. Hence, advertising has to make the product appear different to other things on the market and make it ore appealing to people. Without marketing people would have to make the decision using other factors - that other factor would probably be price.

  • Reminding
Some products already have a strong consumer base and a lot of popularity. Products like Coca Cola do not need to advertise to show off the product, as it already has a huge following. Their advertising, however, is there to ensure that people remember the product and are perhaps tempted to just buy a little bit more of it. It's a clever trick and is done with advertising campaigns like the Christmas television advertisements. The adverts are there solely to remind people about Coca Cola.

  • Persuading
This is perhaps the primary function of advertising. Without advertising people would not buy a product as much. The advertising is there to show off what the product and service has to offer. It's also there to explain why it's good for the consumer, hence persuading the public to purchase or use the service for their benefit. This is a basic persuading function and it's the primary reason why companies advertise. Without advertising many companies simply wouldn't function as they need to.
