Only a Service Dog, such as a seeing eye dog, could have expenses deducted on income taxes. Your turtle or parakeet don't count.

And don't forget service dogs include: K9, fire department pooches to name just two more.

Don't think some people haven't tried. LOL!  It can cost as much to care for a pet as it does to care for a child, but alas, unless you can get a Social Security Number for a pet (just kidding), they can't be taken as dependents:)

Among the tax deductions you can take for a service animal are the costs of buying, training, and maintaining the animal. You can also deduct expenses for food, grooming, and veterinary care, according to IRS Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses.
