In addition to this the company also has a Chief Executive Officer. As of July 2011 this role was fulfilled by Philip Clarke. He succeeded Sir Terry Leahy, who had overseen a period of vast global expansion as CEO between 1997 and March 2011 when he stood down from the role.

Tesco is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 100 Index of the 100 most highly capitalized listed UK companies.

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen in 1919 and opened its first store in Edgware, Middlesex 10 years later. The company had originally focused on grocery retail within the UK, but in recent years Tesco has been increasingly diversified both geographically and in terms of the products they sell. The first Tesco store outside of the UK opened in Poland in 1992. Since then Tesco have opened stores in countries that include China, the Czech Republic, Japan and Thailand.

In addition to groceries, Tesco now is involved in areas such as clothing retail, furniture, petrol, software, financial services, telecoms and Internet services and music downloads. Tesco now has a significant online presence in addition to its shops and superstores.
