There is always debate going on about which one is the best structure, Bureaucratic structure or the matrix structure. Well the major factor which can determine is the nature of the business, which the organization is conducting. However, there are few factors on the basis of which the two structures can be compared.

Bureaucratic structure have high degree of standardization while matrix structure has low or no standardization. The standardization is in terms of the rules and regulations like standard operating procedures or SOPs are followed in a Bureaucratic organization but there may be no SOPs in the matrix  structure organizations. Secondly, Bureaucratic organizations have no differentiation, on the other hand, in matrix structure there is high level of differentiation.

Bureaucratic structure give the tall structure to the organizations while the matrix structure make the overall structure flat. Bureaucratic structure is better for the complex tasks like military, government while matrix structure is good for simple businesses.  Bureaucratic is an example of mechanistic structure however, matrix structure comes under the organic structure. Moreover, there is high centralization in Bureaucratic structure while there is high decentralization in matrix structure.

Organizational structure refers to the hierarchical concept of subordination of entities which contribute to one common goal. The structure of an organization is very important as it determines the rules on which the organization operates and performs.

The Bureaucratic Structure is a type of organizational structure that is standardized in nature. It is suitable for large or complex organization. It has a tall structure where the authority is retained at the top.

On the other hand, the Matrix structure is a kind of organizational structure that groups employees by products and functions. It uses teams of employees from different functional areas for accomplishment of particular work. It is a very complex structure as compared to the Bureaucratic structure.
