Yes you can; contact your State Unemployment Office and they will tell you how to do it.

Currently there are 15 million Americans who are out of work, but this figure is set to rise because of the economic climate. There have been predictions that the economy will slowly get better but it will be a while before employment figures start to rise.

One of the reasons for this is because employers have taken such a battering recently that they will have to have their confidence levels increase exponentially before they will be brave enough to take on extra staff.

In the meantime, their present staff will have to deal with any extra work until it can be certain that any upturn in the economy is a constant, rather than a fluke. This means that recovery from the recession will be slower than it otherwise could be, but it is accepted that employer’s cautionary reactions are to be expected.

Since America slid into recession there have been 7.2 million jobs lost, though President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has made sure that this figure is lower than it otherwise would have been because of the $7 billion that has been put back into the economy.

For anyone that finds themselves out of work, it is now possible to apply for unemployment benefits online, which makes the process a lot easier to deal with. If you do claim online you will need an email address so that they can contact you. If you do not have one, don’t worry, it is easy to set up a free email account with Yahoo!, Gmail or Hotmail.

However you make your claim, you will have to fill in a W-2 form.
