You should be able to get food stamps as well as medical help.  Go on down an talk to Section- 8, regardless of your credit.  Of course, there is always a waiting list, but get on the list. Sometimes, the list can move pretty quickly depending on how many people did not respond to Section-8 calling them in.  Good Luck!
