Believe me .. You won't keep it for long. The bank or rightful "owner" of that will realize the error and they'll take it back out of your account. Don't try to keep something that you know doesn't belong to you. I would contact the bank and tell them. It will save them time so they'll be able to give it to whoever will surely be worried about it.
Over $700 appeared as deposit into my checking account. No idea where it came from. Would you keep it, or call the bank?
i gave that to you have fun and spend it!
10 years ago, it might take a day or two for the bank to find the mistake.
Given the new regulations in the banking industry in the last few years, I suspect they already know about it.
Call them and head off any potential inconvenience for you.
Think of it this way. Once the bank realizes the error and pulls the money out of your account to correct the situation, would you have it or would you have already spent it?
Call the bank. Explain what's going on. You know the money is not yours. You'll feel better for having done the right thing.
Call the bank. You might be pleasantly surprised if it's a delayed direct deposit tax refund. It's more than likely a bank error, and they will take it back. Either way, you need to call. :)
Just remember .. If it has been deposited to your account due to a clerical error, that error will be discovered eventually, and they WILL take it back. If you don't have it in your account they will contact you and expect to get their money back.
It would be best to advise them of the error so they can correct it sooner rather than later. This is not a gift .. They will want it back !
The legal and right thing to do here is call the Bank otherwise if you keep it and spend , and the bank realizes their mistake, they will withdrawl the money out of your account immediately and usually at the worst time for you. Call the bank as it really isn't worth the hassle
