Marketing is one of those areas that seems to be "ever evolving", so it's difficult to know where 'modern marketing' starts and 'traditional marketing' ends to be honest...

One obvious change has got to be the amount of data available to marketers. The rise of "big data" has meant that modern marketers have a whole different tool kit.

Whereas marketing once involved surveying people to better understand a demographic or target audience, nowadays platforms like Facebook and Google can offer very granular marketing information about the interests, purchases and spending habits if any segment in society.
