It's hard to know exactly how many shareholders Tesco have as many smaller shareholders own their shares via a "Nominee" (a company that hold them on their behalf). Investment Funds/Companies and Hedge Funds also hold Tesco shares as part of their clients portfolio which also hides the actual beneficial owner.

However the following information about Tesco can be found in their 2012 Annual Report:

Significant Shareholders & % of Issued Share Capital:
- Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (Warrens Buffett's Company) 5.08%
- Blackrock, Inc. 4.96%
- Norges Bank 4.01%
- Legal & General Investment Management Limited 3.99%

So four main shareholders own over 17% of the total company.

Total Number of Shares Outstanding
The total number of shares in issue in 2012 was 8,045m (including potentially dilutive share options.*)

Employees as Shareholders
Over 210,000 Tesco employees (of total global staff of 519,671) participate in the Tesco all-employee share scheme. In 2011 Tesco delivered over 26 million shares to employees in the "Shares In Success Plan" which awards free shares based on a company performance.
