If you like to sing, dance or act then you could be quids in as a child performer, as the only legal jobs that a 12 year-old can currently do is in the performance industry. These jobs are for children who are involved in television, theatre, modelling and similar activities. But before you consider this line of work you will need to obtain a performance licence from your local authority.
Children could also approach their parents in the first instance to see if there are opportunities in the home which could allow them to earn extra pocket money. This could be anything from washing the family car, walking the dog, doing the dishes, keeping their bedroom tidy and taking out the rubbish.
Once children reach the age of 13 they can legally work part-time. The most common first part-time job for a child in my generation was a paper round, but it appears like most things from that era that this is on the decline. Gone are the days when due to high demand you had to put your name on the waiting list at the local newsagents. The paper round taught you the value of earning your money and the importance of getting up in the morning and being punctual. Nowadays, children’s safety and tiredness at school means that parents would rather continue to offer their children their own job opportunities by taking on extra household chores for more pocket money.
So, if your 12 year-old is not the performance type then at least they only have to wait another year to apply for a paper round, and chances are there won’t be a waiting list either.
