Oceanside is a city on the South Coast of California, in the United States of America. It is a popular resort city and is the third largest in its county (San Diego County) and is the fifteenth largest city in Southern California. The city is part of what is known as a tri-city area, along with the cities of Carlsbad and Vista. Places of note in the area include the United States Military Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which is the busiest military base in the entire country and hence one of the most important. The city’s population was measured at almost two hundred thousand people in early 2010, coming in at exactly one hundred and eighty three thousand and ninety five people in January of that year.
The city’s major growth has taken place since the 1970s, as the population figure for the start of that decade was around forty five thousand people. Much of the residential building during the 1970s and the 1980s was intended to house single families. During the 1990s and beyond there has been an increase in industrial and commercial development and hence Oceanside’s economic base has diversified.
One of Oceanside’s major attractions is its pier and of course the stretches of golden coastline that has made California such an attraction to so many. While it is competing with much larger and well known coastal cities, such as Los Angeles and San Diego, Oceanside does still have a thriving tourist industry and a much lower crime rate than the larger cities. Most of Oceanside’s tourism is domestic as its airport does not fly internationally, as the airports in many other Californian cities do.
