The richest man in Britain is currently Lakshmi Mittal. He is a well known steel magnate, and his fortune is thought to be well over £12.7 billion pounds.

The richest man in Britain: Lakshmi Mittal

Mittal was born in June 15th 1950 in Sadulpur in India, but currently resides in the lavish Kensington Palace Gardens in London (although he's got plenty of other homes around the world too).

Interestingly, Lakshmi Mittal came from a rather humble background. It is reported that he actually spent the first years of his life in Sadulpur, living in a house with bare concrete floors and rope beds built by his grandfather.

His father Mohan became a partner in a steel company in Calcutta, and made a fortune. With a background in commerce, Lakshmi branched out from the family business and took over the international arm of the Mittal steel business.

Today , Lakshmi Mittal is the chairman and CEO of Mittal Steel Company NV, the world's largest producer of steel.

His fortune is thought to include £12.7 billion in identifiable assets (although how much he has in his bank accounts is unknown).

Mittal lost a significant amount of money during the global financial crisis, but has still managed to top the UK's rich list for the past 8 years. He is also a shareholder in the Premier League team Queens Park Rangers.

The richest men in Britain

It is also interesting that the next man on the list has three things in common with Lakshmi Mittal.

Uzbek steel magnate Alisher Usmanov owns shares in Arsenal Football Club, made his money in steel, and also grew up outside Britain. He is also worth £12.3 billion.

The bronze medal in this list goes to Roman Abramovich. He's a well known Russian oil tycoon who also has footballing interests, being the owner of Chelsea FC.

The richest man living in Britain is Lakshimi Mittal with a fortune of whopping £14.8 billion.
Mittal is also the 5th richest man in the world..

The Mittals first found riches in Kolkata, India, where his father, Mohan, became a partner in a steel company and made a fortune.

Lakshmi graduated from St. Xaviers in Kolkata with a commerce degree in 1969. His classmates knew him as a sharp student who was good with numbers.

In 1994, due to differences with his father and brothers, he branched out on his own, taking over the international operations of the Mittal steel business, which was already owned by the family.

Today he is chairman and CEO of the Mittal Steel Company NV, which is the world's largest producer of steel, with steel assets in Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, South Africa, Poland, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the United States, Ukraine and other countries.

Mittal was named the Fortune European Businessman of the Year for 2004.
