Firstly, it is worth defining what exactly DBMS is. According to wisegeek.com DBMS is:

  • "A computer software program that is designed as the means of managing all databases that are currently installed on a system hard drive or network."
The DBMS is of great importance to the commercial environment as it aids the organization of all the important data needed to run a business or enterprise.

The main advantages of a DBMS are as follows:

  • Organizes all files and data into manageable sections
  • No computer coding needed to retrieve specific files
  • Can use a simple search a keywords to find data quickly
  • Small and compact for how powerful it is
  • Can be easily backed up reducing data losses
It is pretty much agreed that computers would not be as useful or commercially successful without the implementation of the database management system.

It allows the average person and non-computer savvy client to still have great control over all their data and files. It can help with work schedules, payment schemes or customer loyalty schemes. The list is truly endless and is growing by the year.

As this sounds like a homework question you should really think about what you are gaining from simply asking someone else the question.

It is understandable if you are stuck and it is right to try and find more information on it to help, but you still need to write the answer yourself. If you simply take this as your answer you could risk failing due to plagiarism.

These have been around since the written word.
Its simply a way to organise documents.
Easy and quick to access, simple to update, a way to undo mistakes.
Paper or electronic storage, which is best is dependant on the scale of your business.
If talking electronic computer systems, its best to stick to simple OPEN if possible systems. Badly designed systems are a serious health hazard for a business, loss of trade results, some never returning.
