# Sam Bought A Stereo For A Total \$676.24 Including State Tax.the Statetax Rate Is 7% What Was The Total Amount Of Sales Tax On The Stereo?

Percentage denoted by the sign '%' means into hundred. So a percentage
is any number as multiplied by hundred. Hence 0.1 would be 1% as:
0.1*100=1
OR
1/100=0.1
In our case 7% can also be written as:
7/100
Which when simplified gives us:
0.07
In the question we are asked to find 7% of \$676.6
For that we would multiply 676.6 with 0.07
So:
676.6*0.07
it can also be written as:
676.6*7/100
Which is:
473.62
So the state tax would be:
676.6-473.62
Which equals:
202.98
Hence the total amount of sales tax is 202.98

That can not be right - you cannot pay \$202 worth of taxes on a \$676 item. There is something that u'r missing here.
Divide the amount you paid by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal.
For ex., if the tax rate is 6%, divide the amount you paid by 1.06.

676.24 divided by 1.07 = 632 (price of item)
676.24 - 632 = 44.24  0r  632  x  .07 = 44.24   (amount of sales tax)
