Unfortunately it is impossible for a 14 year old girl to get a job at Canadian Tire. This is because as a major retailer it employs only those over the age of 16, and most employees of the company are in fact a lot older even than this.

At 14 years old, an individual does not have the work experience to appropriately deal with customers and carry out tasks. In addition, there are many legal implications attached to employed underage workers that most companies try to avoid.

  • What jobs are available for those under the age of 16?

There is no denying that for those under the age of 16, it can be very difficult to find a paying job. However, it is possible if you know where to look. Firstly, if you live near a newspaper shop, you could apply for a paper round. The job of delivering papers around an estate is straightforward and is often undertaken by minors.

Alternatively, you could visit your local town with a mini-CV (ask an adult to help you with this) and apply for jobs at independent stores. Small businesses often look to employ those under 16 in order to cut costs. Try local cafes, florists and market stalls.

  • Are there any other ways to make money when under the age of 16?

If you are unable to find a job suitable for you, you could try to make money in other ways. Ask your parents or guardians for extra chores around the house - they may be willing to pay you a small amount of weekly pocket money in exchange.

You could go round your local neighborhood and offer to do gardening jobs or run errands. Of course, when doing this you should stay safe and never enter the house of a stranger or go somewhere without permission from your parents.
