SNAP food stamp benefits are used to buy food, and cannot be used on non-food items (including pet-food & general household supplies). The average SNAP food stamp benefit is worth $277 per household (and on average $101 per person).

The food stamp applications in New York are dealt with by MyBenefits. Their website is at www.mybenefits.ny.gov/selfservice/begin and you can click a button entitled "Check the status of your application", from there you can login with your username and password to see how your application is progressing. Provided you have filled out your application with all the correct information, your application will be processed and you should automatically receive a response after your application has been processed. If there is a significant delay in processing your application or you have not received any response after your application has been processed, you should contact ODTA. There are contact links on their website under the contact us section, located here: www.otda.ny.gov/contact.asp
It may be worth double checking your eligibility, remember that it is mainly based on your income and family size. However even if you fulfil all the requirements, it does not guarantee that your application will be successful. You can check if you fulfil the requirements here: otda.ny.gov/programs/food-stamps/#eligibility In New York, you can visit the OTDA at 40 North Pearl Street which may be more convenient than phoning or e-mailing if you have any issues with your application. There is more general information about SNAP food stamp benefits in the FAQ section of www.fns.usda.gov/snap/faqs.htm
