How Long Does It Take To Receive The New House Tax Credit?

We closed on our house May 29th and I mailed in our amended return the next day. We still have not received the tax credit either. We want the money to make some improvements on the home.

I don't understand why they don't allow you to e-file an amended return and why they don't direct deposit the money, especially if you had your original refund direct deposited. It makes this process so painfully slow. I'm wondering if the people that posted answers on here 3 and 4 months ago actually got their return yet.

I understand that a lot of people are filing for this but I don't honestly understand why it takes so long. My amended return was 3 pages long. It can't honestly take them 12 weeks to look at 3 pages and send a check. They also have different centers for people to mail them to so it's not like everybody is sending their amendment to one location.

I don't want to complain about it too much because it is a very generous thing that they are doing but it's just frustrating that it takes so long especially since we need the money.

I've been monitoring this forum for a while, hoping for some good news. We closed on our house on May 20, I filed an amended return on June 7 and to my surprise our tax credit was direct deposited into our account on July 16. I wish I had an answer as to why I got mine so soon, but I don't. One thing I do know is that it does matter what IRS center your return is processed at. Just because one is behind schedule does not mean they all are. Good luck.

I totally agree! It took some friend of ours 4 weeks to get thier returns and we are still waiting for ours. We closed June 26th and I mailed them off June 29th and last week marks 4 weeks so it looks like we will be waiting for a while. This really sucks that the government says here is 8,000 to first time home buyers but then says sorry it is going to take us forever- the big corporations got this Bail-out money pretty quick so I guess i don't understand why it is taking so long

I sent my amended return in early September (I sent it Fed Ex so I could track it).  I called IRS 2 weeks later to confirm they got it and they said it was put in the system on Sept 9.  I was reading some blogs and saw that there is a lot of fraud going on with the tax credit so it was recommended I send the HUD form from closing so I did.  Unfortunately people that didn't even close on a house yet are trying to get the credit so that is backing things up a bit too.  It's October 10 now and I followed up with the IRS and they said it already went to the next department for approval on 10/1 so as soon as it is approved there, they will make the adjustment and cut the check.  I also want to make note that each time I called the IRS, they were very nice and seem to understand everyone wants there money right away.  I apologized for calling and they both had said that's what they are there for so don't hesitate to call them!

We purchased our home in Feb. 2009. I amended our return and sent it in June 12th. It is now October 18th and still no refund. I called IRS and they said that they received it and began the process on June 19th. The tax adviser told me that it could be 18 to 20 weeks before we even got a response - not a check - a response. It's my understanding that because we are in a high-volume area, that refunds are being delayed.

This is becoming beyond crazy!!! I sent my paperwork in, minus the HUD because it didn't say anything about that, and it's now FEB 15th.  It's been over 18 weeks since it was put into the IRS system and all they could say from week 12 on is...."it's processing"!!!!  I call back last week and they said they would send a resolution request and that department should receive it and take up to 30 days to respond....not send a check, but respond!!!  I sent mine to the Atlanta branch and it sounds like they are overwhelmed with requests and the last person I spoke with said that they are waiting on more funding to process the rest of the claims!  Yet some people who don't even own homes have been receiving this credit and within a few weeks???  I was also told that some of the guidelines have changed, and when I said I shouldn't be held underneath the new guidelines the lady said..."well they can make you follow the new guidelines"????!!!
I have to agree with the posting above mine...maybe our money is being used to reward the CEO's????  I am so frustrated and I went ahead and did my 2009 taxes and just hope they put a hold on that because I have a claim processing??!!

We aren't closing until the 31st, (7/31) but my bank informed me of situations they had already handled where people were able to amend their taxes before closing and get the money by the time they needed it for closing costs. Which we were banking on. I amended my taxes and sent them in on the 10th of July. So far, nothing, and the IRS website doesn't help. I would expect since they state online that it could be 12+ weeks, they aren't going to tell me anything different if I call, so I’ll will just have to wait and see. Praying that since I was able to amend on TurboTax and request a direct deposit that it will get here sooner rather than later as everything online I have been seeing indicates direct deposit is quicker. Wondering what kind of hick-ups I'll run into having amended it early with a closing date for the future. Even though the bank said that’s worked for others, I’ve just learned to question everything and expect hassle as long as it has anything to do with getting my money back from the government. I'll keep you posted.

My husband and I bought our house in February 09. We had an amended return done and sent it in early july. At that time people were saying 12-14 weeks was the average wait. So, we were thinking maybe in september we should hear SOMETHING?? My husband called, they said it was being processed. Well, didn't happen...and it's funny reading the other answers because they also sent us back a new form claiming they had completely lost one out of our paperwork. We waited a few more weeks after that and called again. The woman said everything was fine and to call back in a week or two and we should be given a date to expect our check!! That again was not the case. After 2 more weeks I called again and they said it had been put on pause and we needed to put in a resolution request which also would take another month just 2 find out why it was even on hold!! Called back again and they said it SHOULD'VE been put back in the order it was when they'd realized they lost something. This has been so frustrating. I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever be here at all. It seems like a joke

I mailed my 2010 returns certified mail Feb. 3rd, they received it Feb. 4th.  Called to find out how it was going - they don't even have record of my return yet.  Said it "could" be somewhere in this office (Kansas City, MO), but call back in 10 days or so and ask again.  You might have to resubmit if they're not in the computer by then.  Also, the lady told me it would definitely take 16+ weeks to process, even if I submitted all the right paperwork.  Why is that?  If you prove you truly did buy a home, why is it taking so long?  I should've filed taxes normally, then ammended right away for the tax credit - didn't think to do so and now I'm not going to get anything for months!!!!  Very frustrating.

I filed in Mid-march, called in early May to check on it and was told it was not entered into the system until April 13th and it would be 8-12 weeks after that date before I heard from them. So early June I got a letter stating they saw that I had submitted an original return, but they could not find it and I must send that in again (even though when I called the help desk said everything was in order and all there). So now I am playing the waiting game again.

I sent mine in the middle of March. The IRS shows that it was received on March 26 and after 15 weeks I am still waiting. They are extremely backed up and they sent a resolution request to the person who has my amended return for processing on June 22. Now, I have to wait until July 22 and then speak to a taxpayer advocate if I have not heard anything yet. This really sucks!!!!

We bought our home September 26th of 2009, and filed an amended 2008 return as instructed to do so by the IRS. It is now almost July of 2010 and we still do not have our 8000 homebuyer credit. The IRS keeps "extending" how long they need to review it. What a crock

We filed our around august 16th its now december 27th and I have called 4 or 5 times and they keep giving me the run around saying there is a lot of fraud and everyone is going thru the examination process. They told me 16 weeks. We are past the 16 weeks and then they told me another 30 days because we have never even received correspondence which they keep telling me they are going to send. After this 30 days our case is suppose to go the an internal investigation department. It's just like the government to give you the run around when money is involved but expect prompt payment when they are on the receiving end!!

I filed an amendment in early March 2010 and now it is June 2010.  I called and they told me that it wasn't seen in their system as received, but not to worry, because it doesn't show up in their system until the tax credit is indeed in process.  Go figure!!???

We filed our amended return in the middle of July 09 and it is now the middle of JANUARY 2010 and still no check.  We received a letter in November stating that we were being investigated and we had to send in the HUD, proof of address, ect.  We received another letter in December stating that we would receive an ANSWER by the middle of February!!  I had a friend who filed hers in October and got her money in November so I am not understanding that.

Here's one you all may appreciate!  I am the agent who helped a seller work with a
First time homebuyer to purchase and allowed my commission to be paid from the buyers tax credit.  I also am still waiting - home closed in October of 09 and it is now 1 Feb, 10, and I don't even have the small satisfaction of calling up and venting my frustration on the IRS.  When this arrangement was agreed-upon, the time frame according to all I found on the internet was 3 to 4 weeks and then when the Buyer called in December, she was told 3 to 4 months.  Perhaps our credits are being used to reward the CEO's of the banking industry??

I'm in the same boat with you all. Is this a scam?  I did all those things, sent in needed paperwork, got the letter saying I would receive a response by 2/17/10. NOTHING! I called, my paperwork hasn't even been reviewed yet, I sent it 12/9/09 by Priority mail. I closed 9/26/09 on my house, it's been over 20 weeks now. I'm beyond angry!

We just filed ours in Jan. 2010 and are scared to death after reading all these comments!!!! Really? More than 6 months???? This is ridiculous! Is there a way to come together and make a roar about to tv stations, the government ,so we can get our money?! They can not be that backed up. This doesnt happen with regular returns when everyone is filing in April. Any ideas ??

We purchased in July but didnt file until March 1 2010. I sent in by certified by mail to get confirmation and H&r  Block told us to send in the HUD, proof of home insurance and a current utility bill with new address so I hope this helps us get a decent response. It has only been 7 weeks and I havent heard anything, even when checking the IRS website, but I am not holding out a lot of hope, although the money would be handy for much needed repairs

We purchased our home November 2009 and had to wait for the proper document to be updated through the IRS. Once it was updated mid-January we filed for our credit and it was received on January 20th, 2010. When I called the IRS 2 weeks ago they said to expect to wait 14-16 weeks from when they received our paperwork. Still don't have it and we are almost on 13 weeks. :-(

So I call IRS last week and they said that I should recieved the check in the mail by the end of this month. So I hope that that true because I wanted to get in order with my bills.

I was told if you just submitted the amended return and no hud-1 statements it is going to take a long time they are going to verify your information . But if you submitted the hud-1 and form 5405 or 5805 something like that . Then you will get your check within 6 weeks that is valid proof that they dont havbe to verify
