How Long Does It Take To Receive Your First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit?

I closed on my house June 26th.  The IRS received my addendum to my 2008 taxes to receive my first time homebuyer tax credit on July 8.  My realtor told me it would take 4-6 weeks.  After the 6th week I called the IRS and they told me it takes 14-16 weeks.  I started panicking because I based my budget on the information my realtor had given me.  I am a single mom with a 3 year old son.  My realtor knew I was going to be hesitant when it came down to signing my name on the bottom line, so therefore I feel he told me this so I would close on the house.  In other words, he lied to me so he would get the sale.  Thankfully I am in a position with my career where I can easily pick up some overtime and a small part time job to hold me until I get my tax credit.  I called the IRS again and told them my situation and asked them if there was any way they could speed up the process.  They asked if I was in any financial distress.  And I told them that I had to pick up some extra hours and a second job.  And they told me that in order to speed things up I have to prove I'm in financial distress.  I asked if I could send in a paystub showing the extra hours.  And they said that proof would be something like a threat to have my electricity turned off or a letter saying my house is going to get repo'd.  Now isn't that the biggest crock you've ever heard???  Hear I am a responsible person....trying to do what it takes to make ends meet until I get my tax credit and they wont' help unless I let my bills go.  I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that.  What is the matter with our government?????

I purchased my home in August 2009, filed for my tax credit in September 2009.   It is now July 2010 and no check yet!!   First, I had to send in additional information to verify that I use my home as my primary residence.   After receiving a letter every couple of months say they received my paperwork and I'll be hearing from them regarding "their decision".   Each letter only buys them more time to put me off.   I call every month to check on it and each time was told they were "working on it".   The last time I called, I was told no one had touch it yet!!   FINALLY I   received a letter saying they've approved my claim and I'll be receiving a check within the next six to eight weeks.   After waiting 10 months, I'll believe it when I have that check in my hands!!!   This only proves that we are at the mercy of the IRS and we can do nothing about it.   It's just not right.   If anyone out there is trying to decide whether to buy a home or not, take my advise and do not make your decision based on receiving your   tax credit any time soon.

I sent my amended return in March, they got it March 23, 2010.   Called on June 22, 2010 and they said it will be sent out on July 2 2010.   I sent in my final settlement statement, signed at the bottom and a copy of a utility bill.   Hope this helps!

I closed on my house March 30th. The IRS received the paper work for the amendment on April 16th.  I waited 16 weeks and then called to check on it.  They told me I was being sent a letter asking for additional info.  Got that letter the end of Sept., sent all the info back, and got another letter saying they received the documents and are currently reviewing the claim and would give a reply by Dec. 9th. Hopefully the check comes before next year!

I havent filed mine yet, but my broker told me that it would take up to 4 weeks to get it back. Did you all file after or before you closed on the home? Because I have yet to close on my home yet and it is taking so long for my broker to get me my paperwork

It is now near the middle of March 2010. My Amended 2008 Return documents was received 11/11/o9. I was initially advised it would be 4-6 weeks. I called after 6 wks and was told 12-16 wks, then I called after 14 wks and was advised to wait 2 more wks, Called again and operator stated paperwork was in "final exam" . She then issued a "Referral" for processing and advised to wait 30 days. To date, I have not been asked to send additional paperwork.

My mortage broker who is helping me get my home loan, told me that it should take no more than 60 days. He said, if you already did your 08 taxes you can fill out this other form to add that towards your taxes and you should get it within 30-60 days. I hope so, because I am closing on my home and will need the money to buy things for the house.

I mailed mine June 3, they recieved it on June 10th. At the end of August I was told I would have my check or a request for additional info by October 5th. Today Sept 24th I recieved a letter thanking me for filing my return on June 3rd and that it was being forwarded to my regional office for review and I would be contacted within 45 days. If your doing the math that puts me at about 5 1/2 months. Tell me again why I rushed to file it this year???!!!

It will take at least 12 weeks if your lucky.  Mine took about 15 weeks and was paid interest.  You are paid interest on the time after a full 12 weeks that they have not cut check.  Patience I know its tuff but it will arrive.

12 Weeks is a long time. I need my $ now. I've incurred so many expenses in the logistics of actually getting in my house. My accountant told me it takes no more than 4 weeks.
