How Long Does It Take To Receive An Amended Tax Return?

It will take you 8 to 12 weeks to receive an amended tax return. The process involved in amending tax returns takes about six weeks to three months. The process of amending tax returns involves a two-part process, preparing a new 1040 and preparing form 1040X.

Details in the new 1040 should be fully and accurately completed because some of the information in this form will have to be matched with the information in the form you fill out in step two of the amendment process. Accuracy is emphasized in tax amendment because inaccurate details only lengthen the period within which you will receive your amended tax return.

When you file for an amendment on tax returns, you will need to attach all the required documents as required by the IRS Service Center. This is because the IRS centre is usually very keen on details of the amendment.

The second step involved in amendment of tax returns is preparing form 1040X. The 1040X form contains a summary of the contents of your newly prepared 1040. You need your original tax returns form as well as the new 1040 when you will be filling the 1040X.

The most important part of the 1040X is Part C where you explain the reasons for your tax amendment. The reasons have to be clearly explained otherwise they will be rejected by the IRS. Extra care should be taken when filling out this form.

In filling your tax amendment form, you need to be keen on numbers. A slight mistake with numbers will completely change your details. When filling the form, it is good to double check your salary, deductions and calculations.

Always make sure that you date and append a signature on your tax amendment form. In the event that you were assisted by an accountant to fill your form, he or she should also sign your amendment form.

Once you have submitted the tax amendment forms to IRC, you can check your tax returns amendment status online or call their offices. This way you will know whether your amendment will go through without having to wait for three months.

I filed an amended return for 2008 in May of 2009.  I had purchased a house that February and was able to file an amendment to get the 8*k tax credit sooner.  I filed at H & R block and was told that this would take 8 to 12 weeks.  I called at week 11 to inquire about my refund and was told that there was a high volume of amendments being submitted and to call in another 4 weeks.  In mid July I received a request from the IRS for the HUD paperwork (which I faxed in the next day) That sat in someone's que for "review" until late November at which point it was reviewed and accepted.  In late December I received a request from the IRS for proof that I actually lived in the house that I had purchased and was asked to send in insurance statements, car registration, utility bills, and a copy of my drivers license all of which needed to show my mailing address (all items requested were faxed within 3 business days).  It is now mid-February of 2010.  I'm still waiting...

A LONG time.  I would do as another suggested and get a financial harship advocate. I was at 16 weeks and waiting...and waiting... They even suggested they "lost" my paperwork at different points in time.  It is a frustrating waiting game, that if you don't stay on top of-you might lose out (remember that you have to have certain information documented into the IRS within a three year period-if you can't prove it got there-ie-send EVERYTHING via certified mail) then you might loose out on the years refund.

I got a letter in the mail from the IRS saying I qualify for a EIC and to mail the form back they sent me. I dropped it in the mailbox on 3/1/2011. Now I am very impatient, obviously because I need the money and am behind in almost every bill, including a disconnected cell phone line.. I was hoping that by googling some info, someone would tell me it only takes a few weeks. Wishful thinking. Is there anyway to find out if it has even been received?

If one has filed one's income tax return on paper or through electronic means, one should use an amended return to modify or make corrections in the filing. Filing a modified original may not correct one's return and may possibly lead to grave issues on one's income tax account.

One has to necessarily use a paper form to amend one's return, as it is not feasible to amend one's return by electronic means. The amended return can be filed at any time following the filing of the original return, but not after the expiry of the statute of limitations, which is dated generally four years from the due date of the initial return.

One can amend one's return's by filling and submitting Form 1040X.

This is just my situation but I mailed my amended return in and they received it 3-20-09 and I waited till 4-24-09 to call just to check the status and they told me mine already started processing on 4-16-09 and I should expect my check around 5/7 to 5/14/09. So mine happened pretty quickly. You can call anytime to check the status.

I filed a 2007 amended tax return and it was accepted in late July of 2008. About 2-3 months after that, I received a request for more information. Filled it out completely and returned it the following day. Now in the first week of Jan. 2009, I receive another letter with a copy of my original tax forms and again they want more information because their copy machine did not make a clear copy. Again, I fill out all of the information they requested and sent it back within the following few days. And still....NOTHING! The only thing I changed was I went back and rightfully claimed my daughter on my taxes where her father had claimed her on his before I had even received my W-2's. I sent in all sorts of proof that she lived with me the entire time and he should not have received the child tax credit for her. What in heck is taking so long???

Good Luck to everyone!!!  When you have waited several months instead of several weeks, you may have a shot at receiving a check in the next couple of months, like July or August of 2010, MAYBE!!!!

I called them yesterday and was told it would take 14-16 weeks because they are backlogged. I am only 4 weeks into the wait, and expect the wait to be what they said. I will update this once I recieve it.

I'm around the eight week mark myself, waiting for an amended refund to come back.   I called and they said it was in processing, that was around the sixth week.   I'm expecting to get it within the next couple of weeks.   I don't understand why it takes them this long cause you know if you owed them money and don't have it in the day it's due they will be all over you every single day.   It's such a flawed system we have.
