Based on the laws in the State of West Virginia, 14 year olds can work. The minimum wage for those under 20 years old is $ 4.25 an hour for the first ninety (90) days of consecutive calendar days of employment. After ninety (90) days the pay may go to $5.15, which is the present minimum pay rate for all employees.
14 and 15 year olds may perform any non-hazardous work outside of school hours. There are a total of eighteen specific jobs a fourteen year old cannot perform. Among those jobs are manufacturing and storing explosives; coal mining; logging and sawmilling; power driven wood-working machines; meat packing or processing; roofing operations and power driven machinery of any type.
Hours of employment outside of school hours are a minimum of three (3) hours per day and eighteen(18) hours when school is in session. You can work a maximum of eight (8) hours and forty (40) hours a week when school is not in session. You can work only between the hours of 7am and 7pm except in the summer and then you can work until 9pm from June 1-Labor Day. If, you work until 9pm, your daily hours can still be only eight hours in one day.
After, reading your question, I think you may need to talk with your parents and parents of your friends who work in offices, libraries, and small businesses. Often, these places will hire teens during the summer months to assist with office type work. If, you have a local hardware store, they sometimes look for teens to help out with sales during the summer months, because of the increased home projects during the summer months. There are a lot of places to look for work, other than fast food and the other places you do not want to work.
You said you love sales, so get out there and sell yourself, to the employers who need help, but do not know, you want to work for them this summer. How you present yourself is the key to convincing the owners of small businesses, they need you. Talk to adults and ask them to introduce you to someone who is in the type of business where you would like to work.
I think you can do this, good luck!
