In conclusion, our experience has been that the journey towards a fully automated business process often requires a combination of techniques. While rule-based systems are widely used, they alone are not adequate to get a high degree of automation. The cost incurred on handling instances that do not have rules defi ned is very high. With complementary  techniques like CBR, business processes can get closer to 100% automation. In fact, a CBR solution alone can often serve the purpose since each case in a CBR solution is a potential rule. If a particular case gets used over and over, then it is a rule that the business process adheres to. In summary, if an organization already has a rule-based implementation, then a CBR solution could enhance the coverage of the situations that are automatically handled. However, if an organization does not have an effi cient rule based implementation, then a CBR solution could often prove to be a more appropriate a mechanism for automation.
