Form 4868 is used to gain an extension of between four to six months in the filing of forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ. There are certain provisions that have to be met in order to be eligible. For instance Form 4868 has to be filed on the due date of returns and the exact amount of tax due for the year 2006 has to be mentioned in the form. The form can be filed electronically and it is smaller than half a page. Information regarding how exactly to fill the form and the provisions regarding its use along with applicability are all explained in detail on the IRS website,

There are just nine fields that need to be filled out which include name, address, Address, Social Security Number, Estimated tax liability, total payments, Balance due, amount being paid and two check in boxes pertaining to location and applicability.
