When RuneScape was first made, it actually wasn't made by any company. The man behind everything in the beginning was Andrew Gower, who developed the game with the help of his brother, Paul.

The two of them launched the game out of their parents' home in the UK back in 2001, and it wasn't long before the success snowballed and thousands were logging on to play every day!

By the end of that first year, they must have realised there was huge potential to succeed, and they started up their company, Jagex, who are the current publishers of RuneScape.

In the past thirteen years, the company's gone on to become the largest indie developer of online games in the UK, employing hundreds of people. And along with RuneScape, they've found great success with many games, including:

1. War of Legends - The first game Jagex made that they didn't personally develop.

2. Ace of Spades - A sandbox game that's found great popularity on Steam.

3. Transformers Universe - A major partnership with Hasbro, developing an MMO based on the ever-popular toy line.

The Gower brothers are still a big part of Jagex, and only a few years ago appeared at RuneFest 2011, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of when they first launched the game. Here they are in the flesh:
