It is important for a business to outline expected standards and codes of conducts for employee behaviour in the workplace. Making employees aware of what is expected of them ensures that everyone is working at the same level and has the same regulations to follow. These typical standards will include codes of conducts such as being punctual and presentable, speaking to others in a professional manner and to keep boundaries clear between certain members of staff.

It is the manager’s responsibility to ensure that all employees are acutely aware of the business’ standards. Although it is up to the employees whether they choose to abide to these codes, the manager is the one who has to praise staff for following the regulations and discipline staff that do not. The manager should also be aware of behavioural role modelling. The leadership theory that the manager’s behaviour will affect that of the employees is one that can be seen in many businesses. If the manager is ethical and abides to the company’s codes of conduct, then it will create a good morale within the staff and encourage good principles and respect.

The benefits of having typical standards within an organization are significant. If acceptable behaviour is outlined to members of staff, it can decrease the potential for problems such as office harassment. Unorganized and unrestricted behaviour in the office can have a large impact on the business as a whole. Members of staff need to realize that when they work for the company they need to abide by the company’s rules. Employees are accountable for their own actions and if they violate the company’s code of conducts then they are liable to disciplinary action. In some cases the member of staff may just receive a warning and be watched more carefully in future. In extreme cases where regulations are broken in an unethical or even illegal way, managers can have the power to terminate that employee.
