Multinational Corporations, or MNCs, are large companies with direct investments and/ or plants in other countries. In other words, an MNC is a company having head quarters in one country, the so-called home country, and operating in other, countries, generally referred to as host countries. Many of these MNCs have, at least at times, operated in so-called developing countries, providing capital, technology and of course marketing skills, given in return for profitable markets, although many industrially advanced countries are equally hosts to the investment by MNCs.

The first ever MNC, and also the first company issuing stock, was the DEIC, or Dutch East India Co. The DEIC possessed almost governmental powers, including abilities to coin money, establish colonies, wage war and negotiate treaties. Even today, MNCs, some of which have budgets exceeding some countries' GDPs, have a huge influence on local economies, international relations, globalization and world economy.

The rapid rise of MNCs has been a major concern for many activists and intellectuals, many of whom regard them as a threat to basic civil rights. It has been pointed out that MNCs create a false sense of need in consumers through advertising campaigns etc, as well as having a history of interference with policies of host countries. Anti-corporate protesters claim that MNCs answer to shareholders only, without giving any kind of consideration to human or animal rights and social, environmental or other issues .

The six largest MNCs currently in operation are, in reverse order:
  • Japan Post Holdings
  • Toyota Motor
  • BP
  • Exxon Mobil
  • Royal Dutch Shell
  • Wal-Mart Stores
The remainder of the top 500 MNCs may be viewed at CNN Money.
To list details of 50 MNCs here is obviously physically impossible. Such details can be located at Business.Maps of India and Investments and Income, for instance.
