The chairman and managing director (CEO) is Mukesh D. Ambani.

Reliance Industries was founded by Mukesh's late father, Dhirubhai H. Ambani. Mukesh Ambani has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Bombay and an MBA from Stanford University in the United States. Since taking the top spot, Mukesh has collected a number of personal accolades, including entrepreneur-of-the-year awards from Ernst & Young and the Bombay Management Association.

Reliance Industries started out as a textiles company and has been grown into a global concern that today is worth US$ 54 billion.

According to the Reliance Industries web site, "The Reliance Group, founded by Dhirubhai H. Ambani (1932-2002), is India's largest private sector enterprise, with businesses in the energy and materials value chain. Group's annual revenues are in excess of USD 22 billion. One who saves the interest of the company keeping aside interest of the country, this organization has not done any charitable work, constructed temples, built hospital for public, instead looked for self growth, what a shame , a plant imported in knock down condition with out paying custom duty in 1978
