He is the son of Robert Andrew Wilson, an advertising executive and operator of a public television station and Laura Cunningham Wilson who is a photographer and a writer of four books. Luke Wilson is a catholic and is of Irish American Decent. He has two older brothers Owen and Andrew, who are both actors as well.
While at St. Mark's School of Texas and Occidental College, Wilson was more interested in sports than in drama or theatre studies at first, but during his later years in college he started to become more intrigued by acting, however he was still more passionate about sports and that was where he exceeded, at both track and field events. After graduating from St. Mark's School of Texas and Occidental College, he went to university at Texas Christian University (TCU) which U.S. News & World Report has classified it as a Tier 1 institution. At University, Wilson was still more interested in athletics and was excelling at the pitch.
Wilson's acting career started in 1994 when he starred as the main character in the film, Bottle Rocket. Bottle Rocket is comedy film written by Wilson's brother Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson and was produced by his oldest brother Andrew Wilson and others. He later moved to Hollywood with both his brothers and was asked to star in the 1997 film Telling Lies In America, which starred Calista Flockhart, the film is about a boy who has moved from Hungary to America and is struggling to fit in with society. Also in the same year he made a cameo appearance in the film Scream 2, but this appearance was of a scene from Telling Lies In America being shown on a television, in Scream 2. In 1998 he appeared in the film Best Men, with Drew Barrymore, which is about a group of friends who robs a bank on the way to a wedding. In the same year he also acted in Home Fries, with Drew Barrymore, which is about a woman accidentally falling in love with the stepson of her lover. Off screen while filming Home Fries, Wilson and Barrymore went out with each other, however it did not last long and they split in the same year. Again in the same year Wilson made a short appearance in Rushmore where he was acting as a doctor, Produced by Owen and Andrew Wilson; his brothers.
In 2001 he and Reese Witherspoon starred in the comedy, Legally Blonde and in the same year he acted alongside Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn in the comedy, Old School. Due to these successful films he became part of the group of actors, which often worked in each others films, known as the Frat Pack, which includes Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Vine Vaughn, Ben Stiller and Steve Carell.
