What is the obligation of building contractor in purchasing insurance and the right of employer in the event of the contractor failed to purchase insurances for the project?

As a self employed building contractor in the U.S. for most of my life, I can tell you that a contractor named on a building permit MUST have liability insurance. If he fails to maintain the insurance throughout the project, the employer has the right to cancel his services until he re-insures.
