When I was a kid, I had a teacher who called me a knucklehead when I made a silly mistake. Was this appropriate? Or out of line?

For a teacher, with todays standards, I imagine it would be considered  out of line. However, I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. It more than likely was said in jest. It hard to know what the intended message was  .. Was it said to humiliate? .. I really doubt it.

There is a big difference when speaking in a condescending tone as opposed to attempting to be humorous.

Even the choice of words would suggest there was no harm intended .. "Knucklehead" would be about the same as calling someone silly .. If how ever, the word "idiot" or " stupid" were used in a condescending tone were used, that would be a different matter.

A knucklehead? Seriously? That's the most harmless thing you can call someone.

Surprisingly, for some reason I remember that phrase being used more as a term of endearment, but that was about 60 years ago.

I occasionally call my dog that, but only when she has done something very annoying to me and yet what she did was so cute.

When the teacher called you that, did you fell hurt or did you feel the teacher was gently telling you that you made a mistake? If you felt hurt then it was not appropriate. If it was said in a playful way then it is fine.
