I don't think they've "taken over" advertising - there are still plenty of creative and powerful ad campaigns out there, but it's common knowledge amongst marketing-types that babies and animals sell.

Why?

Because they exude a sense of innocence and adorableness that triggers emotions deep within us.

Through roller-skating babies and pugs wearing hats, advertisers have a powerful tool to earn our trust, make us giggle, and connect with their brand.

These images also stick with us, and are the kind of thing we're likely to talk about with friends and colleagues, giving them a "viral" factor too.

So next time you're stuck coming up with an idea for an ad campaign, play it safe and hire a cheeky-looking chihuahua.
