Twitter took their time in coming up with a mission statement, describing it only as "a work in progress" for quite a while. However, the result proved to be worth the wait, as the company now describe its raison d'etre as being: "To instantly connect people everywhere to what's most important to them."

Skype's mission is to "be the fabric of real-time conversation on the Web", while Nike's is pretty famous, as well as ambitious: "To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world."

Amazon are at least as ambitious as Nike, and their mission is to be "earth's most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online".

I rather like the two below (from two Fortune 500 companies that I hadn't actually heard of, I'm embarrassed to say!)

The first is from Becton, Dickinson and Company, who say that their mission is "to help all people live healthy lives."

The second is from a company called ADM, whose mission is apparently "to unlock the potential of nature to improve the quality of life".

The mission statements of all the Fortune 500 companies can be found at www.missionstatements.com/fortune_500_mission_statements.htm but, if you need more fun inspiration, there's a random mission statement generator here: http://cmorse.org/missiongen/
