Investments that involve risk bring a better return that those that do not. If you are not willing to take any risk then put your money in a CD at your bank - the return won't be great but the money will be there when you start school.

An investment that brings a good return without too much risk is a "no load mutual fund". These are oriented more towards long term investors but you may find a local broker that will sell you some shares. I personally recommend Vanguard but do your own homework before you risk your money.
