The first settler period was in what is known as the Simple trade era. This is the time before the industrial revolution when poeple just traded what they needed. In the 19th century we move into the production era, with a lot of surplus and mass produced goods. This lasted more or less into the early 1900s though you could say the sales era was starting around that time. You can learn more here.
