Ideally auditors verify information for factual content. It is a demanding profession, requiring great attention to detail. Auditors are necessary in both the financial and insurance industries. I will have an auditor in my office Monday to verify my payroll records because that is the basis for my company's Workmans Compensation Insurance premiums. Without an audit I could have stated any payroll I wanted just to keep my premiums at a minimum. I guess you could say auditors are like door locks, they keep honest people honest.
