It is said that Macy's Department store first opened on the corner of 14th and 6th in New York City in the year of 1858. Then moved to Herald Square on Broadway and 24th in 1902. The store was fully completed by1924.
However, I saw another Internet site that says Macy's opened in 1929 in Columbus, Ohio.
I also saw a documentary about the Macy's store that claimed the store first opened in N.Y. City. So who can say for sure?
My guess is, New York City in 1858.

I think the store opened at a different location in New York City in 1858, and it expanded to take over eleven buildings around the store, which still was not enough space, so they moved over to Herald Sqaure in 1902. It took hem until 1924 to actually complete the whole building. Now that is one HUGE department store, isn't it!...:0) Are you enjoying your week-end? Hope so.

Macy's was founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy. On the company's first day of business which was October 28, 1858 the sales totaled $11.06 (Approximately $287.37 in 2007 USD). Macy had established a dry goods store in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1851 that initially served the mill industry employees of the area. Macy moved to New York City and established a new store named "R. H. Macy & Company" on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue, later expanding to 18th Street and Broadway, on the "Ladies' Mile", the 19th century elite shopping district, where it remained for nearly forty years.
