Forging a signature is a crime. You can definitely get into trouble for it as signature verification systems have advanced a lot. You can go to jail for as long as three years.

If you get convicted, you could go to jail and the time may be determined by the $$$ amount and if you have any convictions for other crimes. I believe forgery is a felony in most if not all states, and could stay on your record for the rest of your life. Best pray for probation with restitution, and get a lawyer !...
