The IRS mileage expenses cover business, moving, medical, and charity. Go to the IRS site www.irs.gov and see Pub. 510 on business use of car; Pub 521 for moving associated with a new job. There is a distance test and time tests you must meet. See Pub. 502 for medical mileage, however, your total medical expenses have to be more than 7.5% of adjusted gross income and you have to itemize. Mileage deductions associated with charitable work can be found in Pub. 526. Also take a look at www.taxes.about.com for practical information.
