In order to become an accountant there are a number of qualifications that you should succeed in receiving and a mix of work experience that you should take part in. At high school or college, you should make certain to excel in mathematics. If you are set on applying for an accounting qualification at university then you should speak to a guidance counsellor at your school. A counsellor will be able to advise you about what you should do and what classes you should take in order to have the most success in applying for university.

Many universities offer accounting and other business related degrees that can train you towards becoming an accountant. It is essential that you obtain a bachelors degree that is widely accepted by accountancy training programs for further qualifications. Some of the best accounting degrees are actually sponsored by an accountancy firm. Usually these degrees will require you to commit to a four year course, during which you will have at least a year spent working within the company. If you succeed at passing all of the exams and coursework essays, as well as have a promising experience in the workplace, you will have the opportunity to continue working for the accountancy firm once you have graduated.

In the United States it is essential that beyond a bachelors degree you need to receive a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification from your state. The requirements for this certificate will vary depending on the state you wish to qualify in. If you decide to move your accountancy to another state and your qualifications do not meet the requirements of their certification you may have to take another examination. If possible, find a specific accounting field that best suits your interests. Working for a niche market can have its advantages as you are well trained to deal with a particular type of client or with specific accountancy software.

To become an accountant one should be a graduate preferably in the fields of economics, mathematics or commerce and then pursue a course in accounting in a reputed college. Depending on the rules and regulations in some countries one becomes a certified accountant after passing a national level exam, for example in the United States to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) equivalent to the Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) in the UK, one has to pass the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants test for which a bachelor degree and experience of working for a period of about 2 years as an accountant are the minimum requirements.

Another qualification highly valued is knowledge of accounting soft wares; one can also go for an MBA in accounting which prepares one for an accounting job with other broader managerial skills that can be used in other areas too, as compared to a pure degree in accounting which goes deeper into theoretical accounting. The duration of the entire training program would differ depending on where you stay, for example in the UK the training for the ACA degree, offered by the Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales, is for a minimum of three years; one can undergo the training through firms or public sector organizations.
