As DDX observed, it really depends on where you live and what type of family you are supporting. I'm surviving on less than $30k supporting myself, my son and two cats. I live in a house, so I have a mortgage payment and a car payment. I live in Nebraska so the unemployment rate here is pretty low. Hope this helps.
